The “Piano on the streets” programme is the most successful initiative of the OFF Competition, both for the visibility it brings during the competition period and throughout the rest of the year. It involves placing grand pianos in various public and accessible spaces in cities and towns across Catalonia, available for anyone who wishes to play them, in a friendly and festive atmosphere.
Pianos on the streets
Every year, Maria Canals places more than a hundred grand pianos in various public spaces available to the public. Squares and streets in Barcelona (Plaça Reial, Passage Maria Canals, Plaça Catalunya, Plaça Pastrana, Ciutat Meridiana, Verneda...) and municipalities in the Catalan and Spanish geography; public transport stations (metro, train stations, airports); cultural facilities (TNC, Palau Robert, El Born Cultural Center, La Pedrera, MACBA, Palau de la Música); university campuses (UPF, UAB, UB, UIC, ESADE...), among many other locations.
Permanent pianos during the year
In hospitals
Vall d'Hebron / Santa Creu i Sant Pau
Currently, at La Vall d'Hebron Hospital, patients and visitors can enjoy the piano in the lobby of the Children's and Women's Building with the support of volunteers every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., as well as every afternoon from 6:30 p.m.
In addition, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau also has a piano in the lobby of Sant Quintí, available from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The competition's involvement with hospitals began with the Vall d'Hebron Hospital and the Paliaclínic Foundation, where the Maria Canals placed a Bösendorfer grand piano permanently in the lobby. Thanks to the success achieved and the association's social commitment, the project has continued.
