The program “Music and social integration” is an initiative aimed at bringing music closer to social groups that face greater difficulties in accessing music due to physical or mental limitations, or because of challenges in mobility and leaving the places where they are residing.
Music and social integration
This project includes collaboration with hospitals and healthcare centers, such as Vall d'Hebron and the Hospital de Sant Pau, where pianos have been installed to offer moments of well-being to patients and healthcare staff. The association also works with volunteers who visit and bring music to children admitted to the Vall d'Hebron Hospital. Additionally, "El Maria Canals Integrates" extends to other areas, such as special education schools, where grand pianos are placed and adapted activities are carried out. For many years, it has also brought grand pianos and pianists to the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center. This program reflects the competition's commitment to inclusion and the transformative power of music.
Commitment to healthcare
The collaboration project with healthcare centers began with the Vall d’Hebron Hospital and has now also been established at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. This initiative reinforces the social commitment and proximity of the Maria Canals Competition, becoming a support for healthcare professionals. Additionally, it offers moments of well-being for both patients and visitors, improving the environment and providing spaces of calm and reflection through music. In addition to the grand piano located in the lobby of the Materno-Infantil building at Vall d’Hebron Hospital, available for anyone who wants to play it, Maria Canals also provides a keyboard for music classes for the children admitted to the hospital, thus enhancing the musical education offered by the Hospital Classroom. A group of volunteers from the competition transports the keyboard from room to room weekly to play, sing, read sheet music, and create rhythms with the hospitalized children. On special occasions, such as Saint Cecilia’s Day, Christmas, or Saint George’s Day, the teachers from the Hospital Classroom and the competition volunteers walk through the center together, filling all corners with music and creating a warmer and more welcoming atmosphere.

The Maria Canals Competition has been bringing its initiative “Music and social integration” to the Brians 2 Penitentiary Center for years. This social project, which has become an annual activity, aims to bring music to all areas of society, offering inmates the opportunity to enjoy and participate in transformative musical experiences. By installing a grand piano in the penitentiary, the goal is to foster creativity, artistic expression, and hope, contributing to the rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates through music.
Superpowers
“Superpowers” is an integrative project carried out in collaboration with the Esmuc and the Fundación del Grupo Sifu, made possible thanks to the support of the Fundación Banc Sabadell. Professional and amateur artists with various disabilities spend several months sharing a combo with students from Esmuc, under the guidance of professionals from the three organizations. The project culminates in performances in Barcelona and other Spanish cities, such as Seville.
